Celebrations at Vuleka Primary School as pupils explore coding

In a collaborative effort to enhance literacy and digital proficiency among young pupils, Rosebank Library, in conjunction with Parkview, Linden, and Bosmont libraries, partnered with the City of Johannesburg’s e-Learning office to observe World Book and Copyright Day at Vuleka Primary School. This event signified a significant stride towards instilling a passion for reading, learning, and innovation within the local community.

“World Book and Copyright Day is a global recognition of the pivotal role of books and reading in society,” remarked the organisers, underscoring the event’s broader significance.

This year, the celebration took on a contemporary dimension with the introduction of coding sessions, powered by Tangible Africa, tailored for grade 6 to 7 pupils.

The day commenced with palpable excitement as pupils eagerly delved into the world of coding. Guided by library staff and educators, the young learners engaged in hands-on activities and interactive workshops, immersing themselves in technology.

“Incorporating coding into literacy events like World Book and Copyright Day not only makes learning enjoyable but also cultivates crucial digital skills,” noted one educator.

A highlight of the event was the Rangers game, where pupils used phones or tablets to assist a ranger in apprehending poachers, all while learning coding fundamentals. Tangible Africa’s approach ensured that learning was both entertaining and educational, fostering spatial awareness, mathematical proficiency, and teamwork.

Throughout the day, pupils were encouraged to explore, solve problems, and unleash their creativity. Under the guidance of information specialists, they grasped coding principles without requiring internet access, demonstrating that every child can thrive with appropriate tools and support.

“By integrating coding into our celebration, we aimed to ignite a passion for reading while equipping students with essential digital competencies for the future,” stated the organisers.

Moreover, the event underscored the importance of respecting copyright and intellectual property rights, emphasising the significance of acknowledging creators for their contributions.

As the day ended, students departed with a new-found appreciation for literature, technology, and gaming. Through collaborative efforts between libraries and the e-learning office, the event exemplified the transformative potential of community engagement in fostering lifelong learning and innovation.

“By nurturing the next generation of readers, thinkers, and creators, we are laying the foundation for a brighter future filled with boundless opportunities,” concluded the organisers, reflecting on the day’s impact and the enduring legacy it seeks to cultivate.
