Children around the Bosmont Recreation Centre had a blast holiday programme and were reluctant to return to school this week. “It is exciting to hear children saying they had fun after taking part in the holiday programme. This is fulfilling and motivating us to plan for the coming one,” said Petra Letsoalo, a Recreation Officer at Bosmont Recreation Centre.
The fun came from a variety of activities that were organised by officials from the Joburg City Parks and Zoo, and Library and Information Services, who pooled resources to produce a rich and fun-filled holiday programme.
Sport and Recreation presented physical and board games such as mgusha, ball dribbling and puzzles. The children’s excitement was infectious. There we those who were competitive and always winning, while others were laidback. Those who struggled with basic co-ordination were helped.
When asked about the holiday programme, Angie Sheik said: “It is very fun. We learn more. We get to know more people. It is educational for all of us, the small and big children. I am happy. I met new friends and they make me happy.”
With a big smile, she added: “They give us goodie packs when we win.”
Library and Information Services brought the learning part into the programme. Children shared their career dreams and went through the books that talked about careers.
The children also went through interactive coding lessons and showed curiosity.
The principal of the Little Bookworms Preschool, Liesl Fortune, donated entry tickets, resulting in 24 children gaining free entry into the Gold Reef City Theme Park. The children ran around and enjoyed the thrilling rides.
Joburg City Parks and Zoo’s Science Communicator and Education Programmes Coordinator Yoliswa Beauchamp demonstrated the elephant tooth paste chemical reaction experiment. When the young ones saw the reaction, they were shocked. Beauchamp cautioned them not to do the experiment at home and the entire group responded.
The excitement left the children wanting more, however, it is back to school time and lots of homework.
