Rabie Ridge Stadium buzzed with excitement on Saturday, 09 August, as the Region A Sports and Recreation girls’ tournament delivered a thrilling day of competition.
Bonwelong Primary School from Ivory Park successfully defended their championship title, overcoming a strong challenge from Dr Knak Primary School of Alexandra in a closely contested final.
Hosted by the City of Johannesburg’s Sports and Recreation Department, the annual tournament brought together young female athletes from across Region A, providing a platform to showcase talent, teamwork, and determination.
Deputy Director for Sports and Recreation in Region A, Mandla Mahlangu, applauded both the players and the event’s broader significance: “This event is more than just competition — it’s about empowering our young girls, giving them a platform to shine, and building future sports stars. The City of Johannesburg is proud to support initiatives like this that nurture talent and inspire communities.”
Bonwelong Primary’s victory was the result of weeks of preparation and a strong team spirit. Team captain Manto Tlaphi expressed her pride in the win: “We are so happy to win again and keep our title. It wasn’t easy, but we worked hard and supported each other. We thank the City of Johannesburg for organising this tournament and giving us the chance to play and grow.”
The tournament ended with celebrations and renewed motivation for young girls in Region A to embrace sport, build confidence, and dream bigger for the future.
