Arts Alive 2025/26 Returns With a Line-up of Creative Offering

As the world marked World Literacy Day today, the City of Joburg’s Community Development Department, through its Library Information Services (LIS), hosted young learners, their parents, and teachers at Sandton Library for the launch of a motivational children’s book, Zizi’s World.

The launch on Friday, 5 September 2025, introduced the book authored by Refilwe Modiselle, one of Africa’s first professional model with albinism. The first of its kind, the book teaches children from an early age about inclusivity and diversity.

The City’s MMC for Community Development, Cllr Tebogo Nkokou, said: “As we celebrate World Literacy Day, the City is honoured to be part of the launch of this historic book that embraces diversity in all its fullness. We are proud of this milestone and remain committed to being a driving force for transformation and inclusivity. Thank you to Sandton Library and thank you to our queen Refilwe for choosing our platform to launch this pioneering piece of work Zizi’s World.”

Soweto-born Modiselle, an award-winning actress and activist who has travelled the world, said: “I wanted kids like myself to see themselves in this book. Whether they have any condition, I want them to know they belong, they matter. I also want parents to teach their children that being born different does not mean they are less deserving of love.”

Chief Librarian Monica Rambulana highlighted the day’s significance and reaffirmed the City’s commitment, through its LIS programmes, to nurturing a love for books and reading.
