The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) invites artists to contribute to a public art project that will enhance the urban landscape and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Johannesburg. This initiative is part of the City of Johannesburg’s long-standing public art and placemaking programme, which adds unique identity and expression to public spaces.
As part of the renovations and fire protection system upgrades at the Johannesburg City Library (JCL), a new water tank and pump installation will be positioned outside this iconic heritage building.
The JDA is undertaking critical upgrades to the library, including roof repairs, fire protection systems, and building compliance measures on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Department. These efforts will ensure the library’s partial reopening to the public in 2025. It is calling for creative minds to curate public art that will cover and visually integrate the tank and pump into the urban fabric, helping to minimise their visual impact while reflecting the library’s history.
The water tank and pump are essential new installations to ensure compliance with the City’s by-laws and National Building Regulations. This work is part of the second phase of renovations to the JCL.
With the JCL being a significant heritage building, the proposed artwork must draw from the oral and written history of the library and the City of Johannesburg. The evaluation of submissions will focus on artists’ themes that reflect the library’s role as a knowledge hub, historical monument, and cultural beacon in the heart of Johannesburg. Additionally, the selection will consider the use of materials that closely match the library’s façade.
