The City Values the Contribution of the Informal Economy

The City of Johannesburg reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting and enabling the informal and township economy, recognising its immense creativity, innovation, and indispensable contribution to inclusive economic growth and job creation across the metropolitan area.

The informal sector is a critical pillar of livelihood sustenance in the City. According to estimates from Stats SA (Q2 2025), the informal sector in Johannesburg employs approximately 457,000 individuals, representing about 22.87% of total employment (excluding Agriculture). This vital contribution is further augmented by another 142,000 jobs generated by private households, demonstrating the central importance of informal trade and micro-enterprises, particularly in the townships.

Reimagining Johannesburg’s High Court Precinct

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, has commenced implementation of the High Court Precinct Public Environment Upgrade (PEU) Project — an initiative aimed at transforming the public environment surrounding the Johannesburg High Court into a safe, accessible, and vibrant urban precinct.

The project focuses on the area surrounding the Gauteng Local Division of the High Court, located within Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD). This precinct is bounded by Lillian Ngoyi Street (north), Delvers Street (east), Helen Joseph Street (south), and Eloff Street (west).

“Meet the City” programme spreads to all Joburg regions to boost investor support

The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Economic Development has established an Investment Fast-Tracking and Project Prioritisation Team as the “Meet the City” Business Retention Programme continues to roll out across all seven regions of the City.

Speaking during the Region A session, the Executive Director for Economic Development, Mathopane Masha, said the City has strengthened investor support mechanisms by introducing a coordinated fast-tracking team.

NYDA and JDA Sign Strategic MoU to Accelerate Youth Economic Participation and Inclusive Urban Development

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), marking the start of a strategic partnership to advance youth economic participation, enterprise development, and inclusive urban growth across the City of Johannesburg.

The MoU was signed during the NYDA’s 100 Days Stakeholder Engagement at The Capital on the Park. This agreement reflects a shared commitment to creating meaningful pathways for young people to access opportunities, skills, and support within the city’s development landscape.

City of Johannesburg Warns Residents to Beware of Fraudsters Targeting Municipal Customers

The City of Johannesburg is urging all residents, businesses, and account holders to remain vigilant as criminal syndicates continue to target customers with fraudulent schemes disguised as official City communication.

These scams often involve individuals posing as City officials, debt collectors, electricity technicians, meter readers, or revenue agents in order to solicit money, steal personal information, or gain unlawful access to homes and businesses.

Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero to Lead High-impact Service Delivery Programme in Ward 58

The City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Councillor Dada Morero, will tomorrow lead a High-Impact Service Delivery Operation in Ward 58. This operation will focus on the Mayfair area, which is currently facing numerous challenges in service delivery and urban management. The issues in Mayfair include significant illegal dumping, unmanaged waste accumulation, deteriorating electricity infrastructure leading to frequent outages and illicit connections, and recurring sewer blockages that present health risks.

Rand Water maintenance to impact Johannesburg Water systems

Rand Water will be conducting planned maintenance on their systems during December 2025 and January 2026 as per the schedule below. This maintenance activities will impact water supply into Johannesburg Water’s network.

The maintenance will be conducted in three phases and will take place in December2025 and January 2026, during which some customers will be impacted by poor pressure to no water conditions

City of Johannesburg Engages African Bank and the Soweto Marathon Trust to Safeguard the Future of “the People’s Race”

The City of Johannesburg, under the leadership of the Executive Mayor, Councillor Dada Morero, recently conducted a comprehensive and constructive engagement with African Bank, the primary sponsor of the Soweto Marathon, and the Soweto Marathon Trust. This meeting extended into the early hours of this morning as all parties involved endeavoured to resolve the current impasse over the Soweto Marathon, affectionately known as The People’s Race.

Rea Vaya Phase 1c (a) Services Start Operating on Monday 1 December 2025

The City of Joburg’s Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) Phase 1C (a) will start operating on Monday 1 December 2025. Extensive operational readiness checks have now been completed for buses to start operating along Phase 1C (a).

This is a new route that will bring safe, affordable and reliable transport to the residents of Berea, Yeoville, Orange Groove, Cheldondale, Norwood, Balfour Park, Bramley, Wynberg, Alexandra, Marlboro, Athol, Sandton, Sandown, Longmeadow and Greenstone.
