CITY OF JOHANNESBURG CLARIFIES MISLEADING CLAIMS ABOUT JOBURG WATER’S R4 BILLION

The City of Johannesburg has noted with deep concern the circulation of false and misleading information alleging that R4 billion has gone missing from the bank account of Joburg Water, one of the City’s municipal entities. These allegations, being shared widely on social media and in some public forums, are entirely baseless, reckless, and create unnecessary panic among residents and stakeholders.

The Executive Mayor Councillor Dada Morero wishes to assure the public in the strongest possible terms that no funds have been lost. The City operates a well-governed, transparent, and legally compliant financial system that has been in place for over two decades. The financial arrangement under scrutiny is part of a longstanding institutional model known as the iGoli 2002 delivery model, which has underpinned the City’s governance and service delivery structure since the early 2000s.

PUBLIC SAFETY MMC MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE UNLAWFUL AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL ACTIONS OF VIGILANTE GROUPS AT OUR CLINICS IN THE COJ.

The Public Safety MMC in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Dr Mgcini Tshwaku and MMC of Health and Social Development, Cllr Ennie Makhafola, strongly condemn violence and vandalism at our clinics in the city of Johannesburg. The blockade of clinics and the safety of our healthcare workers, which denies essential healthcare services to those in need, including foreign nationals. This behaviour is not only unlawful but also inhumane, as it targets vulnerable individuals who require medical attention. These actions have allegedly led to a sick baby dying because the mother was blocked from accessing a clinic in Alexandra.

City Power nears completion of the state-of-the-art Mondeor Switching Station to stabilise supply to Rand Water and mitigate unplanned power outages that may affect water supply

City Power is pleased to announce that the commissioning of the long-awaited Mondeor Switching Station is nearing completion, with the project now at its final stages. This R190 million investment is a critical milestone in Johannesburg’s energy infrastructure programme, aimed at ensuring a stable and reliable power supply to customers and key strategic facilities, including Rand Water.

The project comes at a time when communities have been grappling with water disruptions at Rand Water’s Eikenhof Pumping Station. The Mondeor Switching Station has been specifically designed to address this challenge by introducing redundancy in Rand Water’s electricity supply.

City of Johannesburg to remove its electricity meters from the worst defaulters

The City of Johannesburg is going after its worst defaulters who might soon have their entire electricity infrastructure, including electricity meters, removed as part of the City’s aggressive credit control initiative – under Project Lokisa banner.

The City has already identified more than 1 300 residential customers with a combined municipal debt of R978 million. These customers have failed to pay their municipal accounts for more than a year and risk the possibility of losing their electricity meters due to their persistent non-payment and their refusal to come forward and make arrangements with the City.

Community of Eldorado Park transforms derelict spaces into Green Nooks

Please join us at our main Arbor event in Eldorado Park on 23 September 2025. As we continue our tree planting activities throughout Arbor, so are we honouring the great work that the community of Eldorado Park has achieved in transforming a derelict illegal dumping site into a humble green nook, providing a space of calm, murals from local artists and instilling pride in the face of poverty, unemployment, substance abuse and a sense of disillusionment in a community like Eldos. Eldorado Park, in the south of Joburg, is often described as a violent, neglected, and a forgotten community in Joburg.

RELOCATION PLAN FOR THE JOHANNESBURG ART GALLERY COLLECTION

The Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) remains one of the most significant cultural institutions in the City, housing a collection of both national and international importance. As custodians of this treasured heritage, the City of Johannesburg is committed to safeguarding the collection while advancing the restoration of the gallery itself for the benefit of future generations.

In line with the City’s financial regulations under the Generally Recognised Accounting Practice (GRAP) and the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), the JAG collection will be retained within the municipal boundaries of Johannesburg. This ensures compliance with legislation while preserving the City’s custodianship of its cultural assets.
