Joburg unites for cleaner, greener future with launch of Environmental Forum

The MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), Cllr Jack Sekwaila, has launched the Greater Johannesburg Environmental Forum in partnership with Pikitup, marking a new era of collaboration between the City and environmental stakeholders.

The Forum brings together 11 local cooperatives from across Johannesburg, each playing an active role in recycling, stream cleaning, and environmental education. Its main goal is to strengthen partnerships, promote sustainable practices, and amplify environmental advocacy throughout the city.

JMPD-led counter-offensive targets decay, reclaiming strategic inner-city nodes

The City of Johannesburg is this week intensifying its mayoral high-impact service delivery
programme in Region F, launching a rigorous, multi-pronged counter-offensive to confront
infrastructural collapse, rampant illegal dumping, and escalating urban decay in the strategically
vital Wards 63 and 60.

This accelerated intervention focuses on the Hillbrow Health Precinct and the Braamfontein
education/business corridor, two zones struggling with complex challenges ranging from the
unchecked sprawl of informal settlements and widespread vandalism of municipal infrastructure
to the prevalence of illegal car wash operations and hijacked properties.

Joburg launches Jabavu Mixed Housing Precinct

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, officially launched the Jabavu Mixed
Housing Precinct Development in Soweto on 26 September 2025.

He was joined by the MMC for Human Settlements, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, the MMC for
Economic Development, Cllr Nomoya Mnisi, and the CEO of the Johannesburg Property
Company, Musa Makhunga.

The ambitious project will deliver 1 591 housing opportunities, made up of 768 RDP units, 439
FLISP units and 382 social housing units. The first phase, valued at R485.6 million, will focus on
the RDP houses.
