Nothing brings people together quite like food and shared heritage. Aromas of delicious dishes filled the air as City employees showcased their best cultural regalia at the 7th annual Heritage Dress-Up and Cook-Off Contest.
A highlight on the City’s internal calendar, the event is dedicated to celebrating and embracing the diverse heritage of City employees.
Serving as MC, Lesego Ngoveni, Deputy Director for Online Communication, reflected on the event’s humble beginnings. “This event started from a suggestion made by our colleagues in Supply Chain. The first time we gathered was at the Metro Centre canteen, and everyone brought home-cooked meals. Little did we know it would grow into what it is today. Thank you for keeping the spirit alive.”
Acting City Manager Kiba Kekana encouraged staff to make the most of the day: “Cook, sing, dance, celebrate and embrace your heritage with pride.”
Delivering the keynote address, Cllr Sithembiso Zungu, MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, described Johannesburg as a true cultural melting pot. “Every street and neighbourhood tells a story of innovation, resilience and growth. Constitution Hill is a beacon of justice, and other key landmarks such as the Hector Pieterson Museum, Vilakazi Street, Emmarentia Dam, Soweto and Maboneng are proud reminders of our city’s spirit,” Cllr Zungu said.
The day was filled with song, dance and performances, while six teams cooked up a storm in the kitchen, all vying to be crowned champions of the 7th edition of the contest.
