Bantu Mens’ Social Centre
- 1 Eloff Street Extension, Johannesburg
Opened in 1924 to provide recreational facilities for young black men, the BMSC became a great centre of cultural activity, frequented by intellectuals, artists, writers, and emerging political leaders. Sporting events were held here, plays and concerts, and the annual Eisteddford, which became a national event. In 1944, the Youth League of the African National Congress was founded here, which went on to transform the politics of the parent organisation.
Beacon Royal

Beacon Royal is a fine example of an Art Deo apartment building located in the suburb of Yeoville where the style flourished in the 1930s. Once nicknamed “Battle Royal” it has become a Beacon of Hope to all those who pass along Louis Botha Avenue, a symbol of urban renewal and one man’s determination to save an important heritage building.
Berea Fire Station
- 2 Mitchell Street, Berea
Beyers Naudé House
- 26 Hoylake Road, Greenside, 2193
For over 20 years, from 1977-2000, this was the home of anti-apartheid clergyman Beyers Naudé and wife Ilsa. While in Greenside, he suffered banning, house arrest and harassment from the apartheid state. From here the ageing “Oom Bey” moved to Northcliff, becoming a congregant at the Aasvoëlkop N G Kerk, where he had condemned apartheid from the pulpit in 1963. A rebel Afrikaner, he is admired for his transformation from Broederbond-dominee to anti-apartheid hero.
Braamfontein Cemetery
- 18 Graf Str, Johannesburg, 2000
The Braamfontein cemetery described as the “grand old dame of Johannesburg’s cemeteries” is a stark reminder of the ideologies around segregation and treatment of people based on the colour of their skin and religious beliefs. This serene green lung in the bustling city of Johannesburg is a fine historical tour for the living and the final resting place of the pioneers, engineers, labour force, political and social activists, soldiers, mining magnates and artists of the original City of Gold.
Brixton Tower
- Symons Road, between Putney and Barnes Road, Brixton
Not only a prominent visual landmark, but the Brixton Tower was also a great feat of engineering and technology. The structure is to be considered part of the national estate in terms of its special value because of “Its importance in demonstrating a high degree of creative or technical achievement at a particular period”.
