Region C

About Region C

Region C is home to Roodepoort and much of its surrounding developments in Johannesburg's centre and north, with areas such as Florida to the southeast and Bramfischerville to the south. It is well linked to the rest of the city with major roads, such as Main Reef Road, Ontdekkers Road, Beyers Naude Drive and Malibongwe Drive. It is also conveniently situated for access to leading Gauteng attractions, such as the Cradle of Humankind, Magaliesberg and Pilanesberg.

The suburbs in the north of Roodepoort are among the most attractive residential areas in the City, with houses dotted along rolling hills offering good views of the City to the east and Magaliesberg to the west.  There are plenty of open spaces, golf courses and entertainment areas, as well as Little Falls Resort and The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden.

Region C is also home to two universities – The University of South Africa's Florida campus and the IIE MSA, formerly known as Monash South Africa, in Ruimsig. It is well-served by amenities, including shopping centres, schools, a museum and theatre, health facilities, country lodges, restaurants, sporting facilities and nature trails.

The south western parts of the Region consist of mainly underdeveloped areas which need specific intervention initiatives. In addition, the Region also has a number of informal settlements that likewise require dedicated attention to improve the lives of the residents. Although most of these areas do receive basic services, much still has to be done to augment the services. The current infrastructure improvement initiatives in areas such as Doornkop, Bram Fischerville, Zandspruit, Matholesville, Tshepisong are geared at upgrading services and lives of the people in these communities.

Furthermore, the first integrated housing development project, Cosmo City, is also situated within the boundaries of Region C.

Region C is located on the northern side of Greater Soweto (Region D) and bordering Mogale City Local Municipality in the west. In the north and east it shares boundaries with Midrand (Region A) and to the east with largely prosperous residential areas of Northcliff/ Randburg and Sandton at Regions B and E respectively.

Region C consists of the following 18 wards: 44, 49, 50, 70, 71, 83, 84, 85, 89, 97, 100, 101, 114, 126, 127, 128, 129 and 134. In addressing the City’s problem statement of inequality and illiteracy amongst others the region has a large number of public schools, independent schools and schools for learners with special needs. Tertiary institutions located within the regions consist of UNISA, IIE MSA, South-West Gauteng College, Boston College and numerous private colleges.

Key programmes implemented in Region C are the integrated basic service delivery operations such as High Impact Service Delivery, area-based management, citizen engagement and by-law enforcement drives.

Attractions
regc_attractions

The sub-continental divide, the Witwatersrand ridge, influences much of the geography of Region C, leading to plenty of splendid natural scenery.

It is home to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, which attracts visitors from far and wide, and there are several immaculate golf courses.

The northern part of the region consists of wide-open spaces and is home to many high quality guesthouses. With the Cradle of Humankind a short trip away, these guesthouses make a good base for potential tourists.

Regional shopping centres offer all forms of entertainment, including restaurants and cinemas, while the Coca-Cola Dome is an important venue for major concerts and exhibitions.

Roodepoort Museum

Art Deco figurines, a Jackson Hlungwane sculpture, a late Victorian parlour, a Voortrekker pioneer lounge, a 1699 Dutch family bible, a soft jackal skin karos, Walter Battiss and Maggie Laubscher paintings – these items and much more are on display at the Roodepoort Museum.
Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden
The garden, donated to the people of Roodepoort in 1982 by the farmer who owned the property, is crisscrossed with trails, one going to the top of one of two small mountains that overlook a waterfall and eagles' nests.

Other trails take visitors past the wild flower garden, along a fern walk and a forest walk along the spruit. There is also a walk down to one of three dams on wheelchair-friendly brick and wood paths. Once there, visitors can sit in the hide to watch the water birds.

Businesses

Several initiatives are in place to gentrify the Roodepoort central business district, which has suffered over the years from business flight to decentralised nodes around the region. Though retail, commercial and office facilities exist, their presence is on a much smaller scale, catering just for the surrounding communities.

It is hoped the area can also be revitalised through the provision of affordable housing. Growth in residential and commercial activity has been much higher in and around areas to the west of the Westgate node, as well as in similar developments along Ontdekkers Road to the north of Westgate Mall. Hendrik Potgieter Road corridor is an economic arterial of the Roodepoort Region. We have major retails centres (Kwena Square, retail Crossing Lifestyle, Clearwater Mall, Hillfox Value Centre) Corporate Office Parks (Constantia Office Park, Clearwater Office Park, and Panorama Office Park) and Various automotive dealerships. Developments around Northgate Shopping Centre and the WeBuyCars Dome, previously known as the TicketPro Dome and Coca-Cola Dome, include quality office space and a hotel. The approved Millennium Centre and Panorama Office Park are part of the development around and to the west of the Constantia Basin office node and Hillfox Centre. In addition, there is retail and office development around the Rock Cottage node on the corner of Christiaan de Wet Road and John Vorster Drive, and office park development south of the Olivedale Clinic off Jacaranda Road.

There has also been a rise in office park developments in the region. There is limited industrial development along the mining belt due to geotechnical constraints and pollution. This includes Robertville & Stormill industrial zone. However, industrial activity has increased along Beyers Naudé Drive, with developments concentrated in Laser Park. Another expanding industrial development node is located along the Malibongwe Drive corridor, including Boundary Park, Kya Sands, Cosmo Business Park, and Malibongwe Industrial Park.
