City of Johannesburg Speaker of Council visits the family of Jostina Sangweni

The Speaker of Council, Cllr Nonceba Molwele will visit the family of the late Jostina Sangweni later today, to pay her respects and to comfort the family.

“It is with great sadness to read and hear about the brutal killing of Jostina Sangweni, whom the family had confirmed that she was suffering from a mental Illness” Cllr Molwele.

“In my weekly Civic education show about a year ago we had extensively discussed the issues of mental illness, how in many instances society fails to recognise it for what it is, and how this would be prevalent during this tough period of Covid-19. To now read about this brutal killing of this woman who suffered from schizophrenia is just painful” Cllr Molwele.

As the legislature we commit to enhance Civic Education on Mental health, to educate and empower our residents, given the seriousness and potential tragic consequences of this disease.

We also condemn this gruesome attack by some of the community members and we are also calling for them to care and protect those that are vulnerable.

Details of the family visit are as follows:
Date: 13 April 2021
Venue: Mndeni Soweto
Time: 13:00

Issued by the City of Johannesburg

Spokesperson for the Speaker of Council: Sipho Masigo, 068 040 9431
