The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), in collaboration with the City of Johannesburg, is urging the public to comment on the draft report for the new Urban Development Framework (UDF) for the Zandspruit area in Region C. The Zandspruit UDF is a comprehensive review of the 2008 UDF and aims to establish a holistic vision and plan for sustainable human settlements. Once approved by the Council, this framework will be adopted as a policy by the City of Johannesburg to achieve a holistic vision and plan for sustainable human settlements. Aligned with the Spatial Development Framework 2040, the City of Johannesburg emphasises a transformation agenda to address historical inequalities while fostering future growth to craft a spatially inclusive world-class African city.

Identified as an area with significant potential for suburban development and improved connectivity at ?local and regional scales, the Zandspruit informal settlement is a focal point in the SDF’s spatial vision.

Several nodes within and surrounding the study area, including the Northgate Regional Node, Laser Park Industrial Node, and the adjacent Kya Sands Industrial Node, offer ample opportunities for the study area advancement in line with the SDF’s objectives.

The objective is to formulate a new Urban Development Framework for the Greater Zandspruit Area that seamlessly integrates with existing development plans and policies while aligning with current and planned infrastructure projects.

“We believe the development of the Zandspruit Urban Development Framework represents a crucial step towards realising our vision of a more equitable and sustainable urban landscape in Johannesburg,” says Oupa Nkoane, JDA’s Executive Manager: Development Planning and Facilitation.
