Hundreds of beneficiaries receive new homes in Lufhereng

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Anthea Leitch, along with MEC of Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development, Lebogang Maile, and Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Thabang Makwetla, came together to allocate over 200 new RDP units to beneficiaries and distribute title deeds. The Lufhereng megaproject, situated in the south of Johannesburg, stands as an integrated mixed housing development designed to incorporate social amenities, open spaces, and economic opportunities.

On completion, it is expected to yield 32,636 mixed housing units, with nearly 13,000 designated as RDPs. Since its inception in 2004, approximately 5,500 structures have been constructed, including 2,537 RDPs.

The presence of the deputy minister was particularly significant as military veterans were among those taking possession of their new homes.

During her address, MMC Leitch extended a warm welcome to all present, emphasizing the beneficiaries and their families above all. She acknowledged their vital role in bringing life and purpose to these developments.

“To the beneficiaries, you are the heartbeat of these developments, infusing them with vitality and significance. Your presence today is deeply appreciated, affording us the privilege to share this handover with you and the other recipients who will soon receive their units.”

MMC Leitch reflected on the individual stories often overlooked amidst the broader narrative of housing projects. She highlighted the remarkable journeys of some beneficiaries, born during World War II, whose enduring faith in the promise of a home has finally been realized.

“As we celebrate today, let us remember the resilience and patience of those who have awaited this moment. I am struck by the stories of individuals born during wartime, now entering their 80s, whose perseverance has led them here. My hope is that they, and all beneficiaries, will find comfort and security in their new homes, leaving behind a legacy of stability for future generations.”

Expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts between the city and the province, MMC Leitch emphasized the importance of cooperation in prioritizing service delivery.

“None of this would be possible without the joint efforts of the city and the province. Together, we have worked tirelessly to provide the necessary infrastructure and approvals for these developments. Let us continue to collaborate and keep the needs of our communities at the forefront of our endeavours.”

In closing, MMC Leitch reiterated the city’s commitment to fulfilling its constitutional mandate of ensuring all South Africans have access to adequate housing, underscoring the importance of collective action in building a brighter future for all.
