Tshwaku tames Joburg’s traffic snarl-ups with 200 skilled Points Personnel

In a bold bid to tame the City’s notorious traffic snarls, especially during loadshedding and malfunctioning lights, Johannesburg has deployed a unique weapon: 200 Traffic Points Personnel. This tech-meets-tradition experiment launched recently with fanfare, led by the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Cllr Mgcini Tshwaku. Faced with chronic loadshedding and failing infrastructure, the City opted for a proactive solution, aiming to minimise disruptions and enhance travel experiences, MMC Tshwaku says. “The introduction of Traffic Points Personnel aims to proactively minimise traffic disruptions and elevate the overall travel experience for residents and visitors alike,” he explains.

But he says the story isn’t just about adding manpower.

The Points Personnel, selected from over 100,000 applicants, underwent rigorous vetting, including background checks and “fit-for-purpose” assessments. Notably, some previously managed traffic informally, highlighting the City’s unemployment woes and resourcefulness.

“Budget constraints prevented us from accommodating more applicants, but we hope to increase numbers at a later stage,” he says.

With a focus on dedication and integrity, the MMC urged the newly appointed Points Personnel to fully embrace their roles.

“Under JMPD’s guidance, there will be strict oversight and accountability,” Tshwaku emphasises, acknowledging concerns. “Our focus is to ensure ethical and professional traffic control.”

The 200 newly appointed Points Personnel commenced their duties on Monday, 22 January, covering all seven regions of the City.

“This initiative marks a crucial step in alleviating traffic challenges and fostering safer and more efficient urban mobility amid challenging circumstances,” MMC Tshwaku says.
