In a dazzling show of diversity and camaraderie, the Gauteng Inter-region Chess Championships unfolded over two thrilling days, culminating in a prestigious prize-giving ceremony that had everyone on the edge of their seats. An impressive 1 300 players engaged in the championship, representing all five regions of Gauteng: Johannesburg Chess, Tshwane Chess, Mogale City Chess, Ekurhuleni Chess, and Sedibeng Chess. As a delightful bonus, competitors from Limpopo Province with Capricon Chess and North West with Kenneth Kaunda Chess also joined the fray.

The winners, spanning different age groups and chess board levels to even the gender categories, painted a vivid picture of an exhilarating and fiercely competitive game.
The levels of play not only inspired but urged young players to push their boundaries and strive for greatness.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu, conveyed a heartfelt message through his communication officials, stating: “We wholeheartedly support and congratulate Gauteng Province Chess, Chess SA, and the Gauteng and Johannesburg Sports Confederation for their tireless commitment to serving communities through championships like this one.

“The relationship between local government and sporting confederations is one we take seriously, and we’re determined to strengthen collaborations in 2024 and beyond. We value the diversity showcased by the participating teams, transcending colour, social standing, and geographic boundaries.”
