JRA successfully completes R5.4 million Vorna Valley upgrades

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has successfully completed Phase 2 of upgrades to the Vorna Valley Hydraulic Management System in Region A, bolstering water management infrastructure. With an investment of R5.4 million, the project included the construction of a rock weir, the repair of gabion walls, the rehabilitation of identified wetland areas, and the creation of a berm to enhance water management infrastructure. Phase 2 focused on resolving water management challenges in Vorna Valley between Allandale Road and Harry Galaun Drive.

While concerns about ongoing flooding post-project have been raised by Annette Deppe, the DA Ward Councillor in Ward 132, the JRA assures the community that Phase 3, scheduled for the next fiscal year, will address these issues comprehensively.

Zweli Nyathi, the Acting Chief Executive of the JRA, says the project implemented a multi-year phased approach.

Mirroring the scope of work in Phase 2, Nyathi emphasises that Phase 3 aims to address all remaining infrastructure-related concerns, providing a robust solution for the community.

“Phase 3 of this project will not only meet technical requirements but also align with the needs of residents,” he says.

Nyathi assures residents that once all phases are completed, flooding into residential properties will be mitigated.

Cllr. Kenny Kunene, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, expresses gratitude to the community for their patience and active participation.

The successful completion of upgrades to the Hydraulic Management System, which commenced construction in 2022, has not only reshaped the landscape in Vorna Valley but has also presented opportunities for local businesses to thrive.

Theo & Associates, a vital sub-contractor responsible for installing gabion walls, is one of the local small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) that benefited from this initiative. Its participation contributed to the overall success of the project, highlighting its positive impact on the local economy.

“The successful completion of Vorna Valley Phase 2 not only signifies a triumph in infrastructure development but also underscores the JRA’s dedication to sustainable solutions and community involvement,” says MMC Kunene.

He notes that the commencement of Phase 3 will be communicated in due course to “reinforce the commitment to transparent and inclusive community engagement”.
