Speaker Cllr Arnolds honours Joburg Student Council graduates

Addressing the outgoing student councillors at the Constance Bapela Council Chamber in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, this week, the Speaker of Council, Cllr Margaret Arnolds, said: “Today we congratulate you.  Against all odds, you never lost focus, you stayed in the course and ultimately overcame.”  “Today is a full proof that hard work and dedication most certainly pays off as you have all successfully completed your term in office with excellence and distinction. Never forget that you cannot expect things to change unless you become the one to change them,” said Cllr Arnolds on Wednesday, 06 December 2023.

The Student Council Speaker, Junior Cllr Nitara Moodley, spoke about experience and skills learned during their tenure.

“Our memorable experience was learning how to campaign and participate in an election, and how to be good leaders with ethics and values.”

She added that during their monthly meetings, they were taught life skills such as to run events, cope with stress, self-defence, how to sow, dance, public speaking, leadership skills, time management skills, teamwork, and most importantly, how to reach their full potential.

The Student Council Mayor, Junior Cllr Arabile Maphiri, urged fellow councillors to use the skills learned to shine in the future and lead the country forward.

The Joburg Student Council is a legacy programme initiated by the Speaker of Council in 2008. Some of the key objectives of the council are to:

  • Create an awareness of the importance of civic responsibility through skills and leadership development;
  • Create a platform for the youth to discuss issues affecting them; and
  • Develop and encourage a sense of volunteerism in the youth and demonstrate its importance for communities, the City and country.

During their two-year term, student councillors are required to participate in the community projects such as supporting women’s health and well-being, raising awareness for cancer, promoting literacy and education, and donating nonperishable items.

The Manager of Student Council, Brenda Andrews, encouraged the councillors to continue to be active citizens and leaders.

“Leadership doesn’t come with age. As you embarked on the numerous campaigns and drives to assist those in need, I witnessed leadership in action. With your display of diligence and commitment during your active participation in all the JSC activities and events of the City, I am confident you will be agents of positive change wherever your journey leads you,” said Andrews.
