A long-term partnership between The Houghton Hotel and Afrika Tikkun has been instrumental in ensuring numerous disadvantaged young people from across Johannesburg gain access to specialised training and invaluable skills in hospitality management.
The collaborative initiative – aimed at preparing youngsters for prosperous careers in the hospitality sector – is aptly named the YES Hospitality programme. It has become a beacon of hope through providing comprehensive training to approximately 88 students since its inception.
Beyond its immediate impact on these students, the programme has also radiated positive effects throughout their communities.
Jaco Minnaar, the Chief Executive of The Houghton Hotel, says their association with Afrika Tikkun is a source of immense pride, underscoring the core mission of bolstering the self-confidence of young people between the ages of 21 and 35.
Minnaar emphasises that the impact of the partnership extends far beyond the workplace, encompassing a broad spectrum of support, including social progress, educational opportunities, and an initial introduction to the world of work.
“We’re building a strong foundation of support that boosts self-assurance, promotes social progress, offers educational opportunities, and provides initial exposure to the world of work,” Minnaar says.
One of the programme’s notable features is the annual selection of 20 students who are granted a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the intricacies of the hospitality industry. Over the course of 12 months, these youngsters receive practical training at the Houghton Hotel, laying the foundation for independent and economically empowered lives.
“These initiatives are the keys that open the door to [lifelong careers],” he adds.
The YES programme’s curriculum encompasses diverse facets of hospitality management, with participants rotating through roles in front office operations, finance, food and beverage, maintenance, and HR administration, among others.
Mukundi Mphohoni, a standout success story nurtured by the YES Hospitality programme, attests to the profound impact it has had on her entrepreneurial journey.
“The YES programme played a crucial role in refining my business acumen and skills, enabling me to run my business both within and beyond the hotel sector,” Mphohoni says.
Her business, ‘Sweet Remedies,’ established in July 2021, has thrived with the skills acquired through the YES programme. She says the YES programme not only enhances employability but also fosters entrepreneurship and business acumen.
Phatudi Motaung, HR Manager at The Houghton Hotel, extols the YES programme as an extraordinary avenue for young people to acquire new skills and embark on careers in hospitality that may have otherwise been beyond their reach.
Aspiring youngsters interested in joining the transformative programme are encouraged to apply through the Afrika Tikkun website or by visiting Afrika Tikkun Centres in Alexandra, Orange Farm, Braamfontein, Diepsloot, and Emfuleni.
