JDA engages the next generation of engineering professionals

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) hosted a dynamic engagement session for the Central Johannesburg TVET College (CJC) engineering students. The students, studying towards their National Certificate Vocational (NCV) Level Four in Engineering, had the chance to explore the exciting possibilities their academics could pave the way to. The engagement session took place on Tuesday, 15 August, at Central Johannesburg College, Ellis Park Campus. The session was a collaborative effort between the TVET college and the JDA.

As the next generation of engineering professionals, the students attending the session will have a significant impact the future of the construction and infrastructure industry.

The JDA plays a critical role in the industry as the infrastructure development arm of the City of Johannesburg.

It manages capital expenditure projects on behalf of the City of Johannesburg and plays a critical role in the sector.

The engagement session was presented by JDA acting CEO Siyabonga Genu.

The engagement session provided insights into the diverse career paths within the sector. Underlined the significance of infrastructure development and emphasised the pivotal role that engineering talents can play in shaping the future of the industry.

From civil engineering and project management to mechanical engineering and urban planning, attendees gained a comprehensive overview of the array of roles that engineering graduates can pursue in this dynamic field.

“The infrastructure sector plays a fundamental role in the growth and development of any society. Roads, bridges, energy systems, water supply, and public facilities are just a few examples of the vital components that underpin modern communities,” Genu said.

“As future engineers, these students’ innovative ideas, expertise, and dedication to creating solutions will be crucial for addressing the evolving challenges in urbanisation, transportation, energy, and more,” Genu noted.

Ms Sylvia Matjokana, Support Officer at CJC, gave positive feedback about the session, indicating that it was well received by students. “The students in attendance were attentive and gained value insights throughout the engagement,” she said.

“I realised that there were plenty of questions asked to the acting CEO that made me appreciate that there is a need for these types of engagements,” she noted.
