City plans to roll out KleenaJoburg campaign to all parts of Joburg

The City of Johannesburg plans to take the #KleenaJoburg campaign to all the seven regions of the City. This was revealed yesterday, 19 April 2023, by the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Jack Sekwaila, who relaunched the campaign in Alexandra, Region E. The City is divided in seven regions, from A, which includes Midrand and Ivory Park, D, which has Soweto, and G, which comprises Orange Farm and Lenasia.

The MMC was accompanied by officials from City Power, Joburg Water and Pikitup gathered at Alexandra Stadium where Cllr Sekwaila addressed residents of the Alex community, NGO’s and councillors that were present.

Cllr Sekwaila said the City of Johannesburg is taking active steps to improve service delivery throughout its regions by means of clean up campaigns.

The #KleenaJoburg campaign is about clearing all illegal dumping, fixing street lights and unblocking water drainage and sewer blockages. It also ensures bylaws are adhered to especially to those who dump illegally and use water recklessly, among other things.

“We have gathered here to take necessary steps to improve the service delivery to our residents. I have asked all entities under my department (EISD) to be present as we roll out this progressive campaign #KleenaJoburg.

Each entity will attend to its responsibilities. I do this so that when I leave Alex, you know who to love or hate when there is or isn’t service delivery in your area,” said Cllr Sekwaila.

He said that Alexandra was chosen to relaunch the clean-up campaign because of the historic significance of the area. Alex is where most of the city’s leaders and celebrities have launched themselves. But it is also where the government launched its township development programme, Alexandra Renewal Project.

“We are here because we recognise the status that Alexandra should be in. The residents of Alexandra deserve clean streets, safe and healthy neighbourhoods, and even more a cleaner environment,” said Cllr Sekwaila.

The #KleenaJoburg campaign will be rolled out in all regions to fast track service delivery across the City. It is also to ensure a cleaner world-class African city.

“With this campaign we aim to partner with communities in ensuring we keep our neighbourhoods clean and healthy. The #KleenaJoburg campaign will in future includes other department to ensure that we fast-track service delivery even more.

“We had one joint programme with Public Safety department in the past week and we have agreed to continuously have such programmes and enforce bylaws where necessary. We will jointly embark on the raiding of scrap yards soon. We will include economic development also to be part and to make sure that taxi ranks and street traders are engaged to keep their area of work clean. Working together with all these other departments will assist to speed up issues of service delivery,” Cllr Sekwaila concluded.
