SA India Day Carnival promises exciting festivities

The SA India Day Carnival, hosted by India Club and Consulate General of India, Johannesburg, is returning to the Wanderers Stadium on Saturday, 12 August 2023, with loads of fun and colourful activities lined up to entertain families and friends. This year’s festival organisers have gone the extra mile to bring the beauty of India to the heart of Johannesburg, promising a day filled with vibrant colours and lively music.

Visitors must prepare to immerse themselves in carnival festivities, from dazzling fashion show, intercultural performances showcasing the fusion of Indian and South African arts, an array of delightful food stalls offering authentic Indian cuisine, and non-food stalls featuring traditional crafts, art, and merchandise.

This year’s festival will feature a line-up of 45 performances including an impressive ensemble of 600 artists, 10 exceptional local performances, 15 captivating representations from various Indian states, and 18 thrilling exhibitions by outstanding artists hailing from Johannesburg.

Artists on the bill include renowned artists such as Sashin Rob Kandhai from Desi Motion, Anusia Pilley’s Anavarta Dance Studio, Anisha Bramdew from Sitare, and the energetic Soweto Shining Stars.

“This festival represents a beautiful tapestry of cultures coming together, and we are excited to add our unique colours to this canvas. We are grateful for the opportunity to share our passion with the audience and celebrate the vibrant spirit of South Africa and India together,” says Zamkulunga Ntembiso Vitshima, the founder Soweto Shining Stars Youth Production.

The festival provides a unique opportunity for the Indian diaspora and the wider community to immerse themselves in the colours, flavours and traditions of India.

“Through SA India Day Carnival we aim to create an immersive and engaging environment that not only entertains but also fosters a sense of connection and pride among Indians residing in South Africa. This event serves as a platform for cultural exchange, bridging the gap between different communities and enhancing mutual understanding,” says John Francis, the President of India Club.

Joburg Tourism’s Laura Vercueil says this carnival is a wonderful addition to the vibrant cultural, lifestyle, social and leisure scene in Joburg. “This is something uplifting, unifying and joyful to celebrate life in Jozi – the continent’s leading all year round destination for business and leisure.”

The carnival is free and will open from 11h00 to 20h00.
