In honour of Women’s Day, Cllr Anthea Leitch, the MMC for Human Settlements, embarked on a meaningful tour starting at the Eldorado Park Women’s Forum, a shelter dedicated to combating gender-based violence (GBV) in Lenasia. At this heartfelt event, MMC Leitch distributed thoughtful goodie bags to the women present and extended gestures of joy to their children.

Later, within the embrace of the Davidsonville community, an inspiring local GBV activist shared firsthand experiences, extending the wellspring of inspiration that drives her commitment to aiding others.
Amidst this gathering, the MMC seized the moment to express her profound admiration for these women, who, in the face of adversity, have navigated the harrowing terrain of GBV.
“Instead of allowing yourselves to be defined by victimhood, rise as triumphant victors, igniting empowerment from within. Your collective journeys serve as beacons of hope, illuminating the path for countless others,” she told them.
In a compelling reflection on the gravity of GBV, Cllr Leitch underscored that the statistics surrounding gender-based violence are rooted in real-life stories—stories of women marked by names, identities, and traumatic experiences.
Her passionate plea rang loud: “Gender-based violence isn’t just a stark collection of figures; it resonates as lived realities that demand our attention. It signifies a deep-seated societal failure. The price we pay for silence and inaction is steep.”
MMC Leitch’s message ventured further, urging a transformative shift from condemnation to action.
She stressed the urgency of robustly enforcing anti-GBV laws, championing comprehensive protocols, fostering a network of supportive referrals, and instituting resolute policies.
In this context, she emphasised the significance of sensitively reporting GBV cases as a cornerstone of change.
Cllr Leitch lauded the attendees for their unwavering determination.

“Amidst the physical and emotional battles many of you face, your resolve to amplify the voices of the marginalised is commendable. Your bravery is an inspiration.”
This year’s Women’s Day, imbued with significance, bore witness to the powerful impact of MMC Leitch’s message to victims of GBV and her unwavering commitment to championing the cause.
In South Africa, 9 August, Women’s Day transcends its status as a mere date on the calendar; it encapsulates the valiant spirit that ignited the 1956 march, where 20,000 women took a fearless stand against the repressive apartheid pass laws.
The day resonates as a poignant reminder of the unwavering resilience and indomitable determination woven into the fabric of the nation’s history.
It’s an occasion to pause and contemplate the sacrifices etched into the annals of time, the hard-fought rights earned, and the ongoing battles for unshakeable gender equality.
