MMC for Economic Development Cllr Nomoya Mnisi and MMC for Finance Cllr Dada Morero will deliver a keynote addresses at the official launch of the Tshiamo Market at Joburg Market in City Deep. The Mandela People’s Market has been renamed Tshiamo Market. This informal satellite market on the Joburg Market’s City Deep property provides 71 informal traders with the opportunity to generate their own income.
Joburg Market’s Senior Manager: Marketing and Communications, Hope Mabaso, says the decision to rename the market comes after finding a name that encompasses what identifies the market stands for.
“Tshiamo means ‘all is well’, signalling growth and a new chapter for the market and informal traders”, says Mabaso.
“The new name appealed to Joburg Market as it emphasizes the vision and strategy of the Joburg Market, as an entity of the City that is smart and globally competitive in the fresh-produce industry and geared to deliver food security,” he adds.
Mabaso says ‘Tshiamo’ was chosen among other countless names that were submitted to the market’s executive committee and board of directors.
The new market will feature 23 more stalls, cold-storage facilities, cooking and eatery facilities with modern seating structures to bring dignity to the informal traders and making the market worth visiting for customers.
David Osaro and Themba Radebe who are some of the informal traders who owned a stall at Tshiamo Market, are excited about the renaming as this will mark a fresh start for the market.
“We feel like the name change, along with revamped stalls, will bring more positive changes in the market,” say the duo.
