City’s pools offer refreshing, fun-filled escape for bathers

The Southern Suburbs Swimming Pool, located in Oakdene, Johannesburg, has emerged as an ideal spot with most users participating in interesting activities offered by the facility, from water aerobics classes to swimming lessons and aqua fitness programmes. Mandla Mdlalose, the Deputy Director for Sports and Recreation in the City of Johannesburg, says they are thrilled with the remarkable turnout of the pools users. He says the turnout is a testament to the vital role these pools play in providing accessible recreational spaces for residents of all ages. Residents of all ages have found a way to stay in shape while staying cool in this City’s pool that contributes to the overall fitness and well-being of the community.

Since 1 September 2023, the City’s pools have provided a refreshing and fun-filled escape for thousands of users enjoying the blues while beating the heat.

The City’s pools in Region F including Moffat Park, Southern Suburbs, Crown Gardens, Ellis Park, Yeoville, and Hofland Park have drawn an impressive and magnificent number of users, totaling over 63,026 since their opening at the start of September.

Nobantu Mandu, the Principal of Lesedi Mokgadi Educare in Lehae, shares her thoughts on the Southern Suburb Swimming Pool, where she brought her charges to enjoy the facilities for the first time.

She says the pool is incredibly user-friendly with its designs that are safe and accommodating for children.

“It is delight to take our leaners out of the school bringing them here. It is heartwarming to see our kids learn and grow in the water while having fun,” says Mandu.

For the younger generation, these swimming pools act as a central spot for mingling and leisure activities, where they create new friendships and reinforce existing ones.

Aliff Mbedzi and Tumi Molepo, along with others, say they enjoy the refreshing waters of the City’s pools.

“This facility provides more than just a swimming spot but a place to socialise with friends and find a peaceful escape from the world,” says Molepo.

Mdlalose says the City places high priority on the safety of its pool users and has employed about 216 lifeguards city wide who are dedicated to ensuring the safety of visitors.
