The City of Johannesburg was alive with the spirit of sportsmanship as the 2023 OR Tambo Soncini Games kicked off from 28-29 October 2023 in Joburg. The host City, Joburg, pulled emerge as the 2023 OR Tambo Soncini Games winners. The City of Joburg’s MMC for Community Development, Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu, and the Mayor of Reggio Emilia, Nico Giberti, joined hands with the Gauteng Sports Confederation to officially inaugurate the games. “This year’s games not only celebrated the athletic prowess of young athletes but also highlighted the power of international collaboration in fostering talent, goodwill, bringing communities together and friendship,” were messaged expressed at the official opening by various speakers.

The OR Tambo Soncini Games, an inclusive youth sports event, welcomed participants from Gauteng municipalities, all under 17 years old, with the overarching goal of identifying budding talents to bolster national teams.
One young athlete, Aphele Bengu, from the Hope School of Disability, captured hearts with his unwavering determination. As he gracefully wheeled his wheelchair, Bengu shared his ambition, saying, “I am happy and I am going to win”.
His performance at the games could potentially earn him a spot on the Gauteng Team, slated to travel to Italy as part of an exchange programme.
These games were the result of the Pact of Solidarity signed between the Gauteng Provincial Government and Province of Reggio Emilia in Italy.
This partnership, inspired by the vision of leaders like Oliver Reginal Tambo and Giuseppe Soncini, which encompassed collaboration in social, economic, technology, and water projects.
Beyond medals and trophies, the games represent a vital vehicle for advancing social and economic development.
They showcase the long-lasting friendship and international solidarity that great leaders had envisioned through sports.
The spotlight also shone on exceptional athletes like Ben Nkadimeng, a focused basketball player from Pimville, Soweto.
His outstanding performance and sportsmanship in the basketball finals helped Team Joburg clinch victory, concluding the games in a spectacular fashion.
The 2023 OR Tambo Soncini Games were more than just a sporting event; they were a testament to the potential of young athletes, the strength of international collaboration, and the power of sports to unite communities, just as envisaged by revolutionary leaders.
As the sun set on this memorable event, the world witnessed the true essence of sports – a source of inspiration, camaraderie, and dreams realised.
Kabelo Zondo, a supportive mother, was among the spectators.
She expressed her joy in being there to witness her child’s progress in rugby, hoping for a bright future and the necessary support. Her sentiments echoed the dreams and aspirations of many parents in the stands.
