Newtown Precinct to host SA’s leg of the African Throne Tour

The African Throne Tour, featuring South African hip-hop Nasty C and Cassper Nyovest, has taken the continent by storm with electrifying performances. This extraordinary musical journey has captivated audiences from all walks of life, and the last stop is Newtown, a creative and cultural soul of Johannesburg. The tour began in Swaziland and travelled through various African countries such as Kenya, Mozambique, Botswana, Zambia, Rwanda, Cape Town, and Durban. Now in Johannesburg, the tour will be a celebration of African culture, unity, and the vibrant music scene. As a place of artistic and creative expression, Newtown has become known for its spectacle events, public art and heritage attractions.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) continues as champion and ‘caretaker’ of Newtown, managing bookings for public spaces, supporting some limited safe and clean operations through facilities rental incomes, and attempting to raise funding for the precinct from national and provincial bodies.

The grand finale of the African Throne Tour will take place at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Johannesburg on the Saturday, 28 October 2023.

This final show promises to be a monumental event, bringing together music enthusiasts, fans, and supporters to witness a historic performance.

“The JDA is excited to have the African Throne Tour in our precinct. The tour will develop and promote the Newtown district and the Mary Fitzgerald Square, as a dynamic, vibrant, sophisticated, and cosmopolitan, boasting the best cultural offerings in Johannesburg,” said Oupa Nkoane, the Executive Manager of Development Planning & Facilitation.
