Region F Health was recently out in full force in an effort to empower and raise awareness about healthy living and chronic diseases that contribute to a high morbidity and mortality rate. The health campaign was held at Denver Hostel and the goal was to involve the residents there as well as the informal settlements surrounding the hostel.
“Residents were educated by health promoters and community health workers on how to improve their health. They were also informed about environmental health services available in their area,” said Nonhlanhla Magwaza, the City of Johannesburg’s Health Promotion Operations Manager.
“The goal is to get more local communities taking part in medical screenings so that chronic diseases can be detected early and the patients referred for further assessment,” said Magwaza.
The hostel’s induna, Babu Mbatha, was appreciative that the services were brought to them, saving them the trouble of travelling. He also emphasised the importance of making this a regular ongoing service delivery.
Child immunisation defaulter tracing, deworming and vitamin A supplements, medical screening tests for high blood pressure, diabetes, prostate cancer, and HIV counselling and testing were among the many services provided. Vector control, hygiene education, and the distribution of educational materials were also provided.
Magwaza said she was encouraged to see the residents come in their numbers. “This shows many residents are willing to take their health into their hands. The campaign was a success. More campaigns focusing on hostels and informal settlements will be conducted in future.”
