Women in volleyball fight breast cancer

Four female volleyball clubs came together under the theme of breast cancer to participate in the volleyball games at Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre this weekend. Players were from Kad Volleyball Club, Delfos Volleyball Club and Bazookas Volleyball Club. These are in the main a group of women who work full time. They belong to volleyball clubs and practice at least once a week after work at various sport and recreation facilities across the city.

“The City of Joburg Sport and Recreation has observed a pattern of dropping numbers for women participation in sport more especially as they grow up. A draw back indeed because sport clubs and physical activities are associated with health benefits and reduced risk behaviour,” said Dr Karabo Semenya.

Sashnee Nair, the Media and Marketing Manager for KAD Volleyball Club, said when there is an opportunity for developing women, they come in. “When we started, it was a bit of a challenge and we got to the momentum of being consistent, adhering to the timetable and ensuring that we are available to play. It is great to be part of the team.”

Nair further said: “Weekends when we have games, we come with our children. This helps as we all have different challenges. We team up, support each other and bring our children with. Most often when we play, our children play with each other or sit in their little corners to read or be on their phones.”

“We also participate in games to communicate certain messages. Today, we are here for breast cancer awareness. Purpose being to encourage each other to eat well and go for regular check-ups,” said Nair.

Coach Nqobi Ndlovu of Bazookas Volleyball Club added: “I enjoy coaching masters, above 30-year-old women because they are committed. My team won and I am ecstatic. I support breast cancer campaign.”

In conclusion Sita Singh, the Chairperson of Kad Volleyball Club, said women continue to play and want to contribute to the development of younger players. She said keeping women in sport promotes sisterhood.

“Keeping women participation in sport helps in building a healthy nation, more especially where there in a common goal.”
