City celebrates World Diabetes Day

The City of Joburg, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Health, Novo Nordisk and the Wits Health Consortium, celebrates World Diabetes Day at River Park Clinic in Lombardy East on 14 November 2022. Gauteng MEC for Health Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, the acting MMC for Health and Social Development in the City of Joburg, Cllr Ronald Harris, and Sara Norcross, the Vice-President & General Manager of Novo Nordisk South Africa.​

Over the past decade, diabetes has become as one of the biggest causes of death. In South Africa diabetes is the second leading cause of mortality after tuberculosis.

The emphasis was on maintaining a healthy weight, exercising and eating healthy to prevent diabetes. Diabetes is usually identified and treated in primary healthcare clinics. Early detection prevents health care complication such as heart disease, chronic kidney disease and nerve damage.

Nkomo-Ralehoko emphasised how preventable chronic diseases such as diabetes are putting pressure on the health care system.

According to a study conducted by National Library of Medicine, by 2030 type 2 diabetes will cost the South African government R 35.1 billion. Approximately 51% of these estimated cost will be attributable to the management of type 2 diabetes, and 49% of cost will be attributable to complications.

Residents of Lombardy East and surrounding areas had the opportunity to check for diabetes and other chronic disease such as hypertension.

Gogo Nonhlanhla Mazibuko from Alex, who was at the event, said: “I have diabetes and this event was very helpful in educating me about the disease. I am confident I will live long.”
