Festival of lights promises a memorable December for the family

There are not just lights, there’s cameras flashing and a lot of exciting surprises left with the action-packed entertainment available at the Johannesburg Zoo this festive season. With the Festival of Lights underway at the Zoo, the next few days promise to end off your December with a bang. “There is a treat for everyone in the family to enjoy, food music, dance and of course the life-sized lights strategically placed throughout the zoo for nocturnal animals and visitors’ enjoyment,” says Bongani Maseko, Joburg Theatre’s Marketing and PR specialist.

The jam-packed programme includes artists such as Mandla Ntlaks, well-known for his vocals, as well as the Mzansi Youth Choir and its beautiful and youthful sound, which is definitely not to be missed.

You can catch these acts at the festival between 20 December 2022 and the 01 January 2023.

Maseko says another unique experience is the Tribhangi dancing, which means “three bends in a body”, which will be demonstrated through the dancers exclusive presentation, challenging experimentation, enthusiasm and energy.

The dance company’s work seeks to reflect profound sensitivity, respect, understanding and knowledge of cultures through dance.

It boasts a repertoire that includes African, Indian, contemporary and Afro-fusion.

For those who love experiencing different cultures, come watch the Tribhangi dancing at the zoo from 15-18 December and be transported through the art of dance.

Maseko points out that the Joburg Festival of Lights doesn’t only offer entertainment to patrons but creates employment opportunities to the youth of the country.

“These jobs include stage technicians, sound engineers, performers and ushers.

These jobs will be able to provide their families with the wage received from working at the festival. Another reason to support the fun filled festival,” he adds.

Open from 7pm – 10pm daily except on Mondays, visitors can be rest assured that the Festival of Lights still has plenty in store to see and do.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnics (strictly no alcohol) and camp chairs. There are a selection of food stalls including Sausage Saloon, Chip n dip, Curry corner and Chic Inn and many others available every night. Stages restaurant at the main entrance, opposite Tree of Lights, offers a sit-down option for those who are looking to dine in.

Ticket prices are R165 for adults, R90 for pensioners and R85 for children aged 3-12 years. Children under three years enter for free. Tickets can be purchased from www.joburgtheatre.com or www.webtickets.co.za.
