
Tuesday, 06 June 2023, turned out to be a breezy and sunny day as the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda, prepared to deliver his maiden State of the City Address in Braamfontein. Mayor Gwamanda joined the Public Safety’s Drill Squad Command as it marched from Jorissen Street to the Metro Centre where he was greeted and welcomed by the Speaker, Cllr Colleen Makhubele, Whip of Council and members of the Joburg Student Council Executives.
Other guests who had been invited to the address included the City’s residents, members of a local and international business organisation and local charities. So of the onlookers ululated on the mayor’s arrival.
The atmosphere around the City’s chambers was calm and peaceful as the South African flag, the Joburg Emergency Management Services’ flag and JMPD flag fluttered in the air to mark the momentous occasion.
Politicians who make up the 270 councillors in the City of Johannesburg came to witness the address dressed in in fashionable fabrics and stood to attention at the entrance of the Constance Conny Bapela Council Chamber before the procession.
While the purpose of the State of the City Address is to inform the City about its present economic, political, and social condition, it is also brings together member of the community in the same roof with stakeholders to hear about the City’s progress and plans, and to be inspired to work together towards a brighter future for all.
