The City of Johannesburg is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of residents during the end-of-year festivities. The municipality encourages holidaymakers to take precautions this December as they travel through all four quadrants of the metro and the country. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) will be out in full force to prevent crime and a large number of traffic accidents.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the municipality is committed to creating a clean and safe city in which all of its residents can thrive.
Fihla calls on residents to be extra vigilant as the holiday season beckons and festivities get underway.
“The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year, and criminals will be looking for easy targets, but we will be working tirelessly to combat such behaviour and remain committed to ensuring the safety of all residents,” Fihla says.
The JMPD advises those travelling to various locations across the country to check if their vehicle is roadworthy in order to avoid unnecessary breakdowns and avoidable accidents.
“Drivers should always follow the rules of the road, avoid excessive speeding, and, most importantly, do not drive while under the influence of alcohol,” Fihla warns.
While on vacation, homeowners should check to see if their alarm systems are working properly.
Alternatively, homeowners should notify relatives, neighbours, or friends when they are going away so that they can keep an eye out for any suspicious activity around their home.
Residents are also encouraged to be aware of their surroundings when withdrawing money from ATMs, to protect their pin, and to never accept help from strangers.
“Always be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for anything suspicious,” Fihla emphasises.
Meanwhile, Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) spokesman Robert Mulaudzi has issued a warning to residents about the dangers of fireworks as New Year’s Eve approaches.
Given that fireworks are the cause of the majority of injuries reported around the end of the year, residents are advised to follow bylaws governing the use of fireworks to make the holiday more joyous and safe.
“Everyone should attend public firework displays organised and monitored by firework experts to reduce the high risk of fire and burn injuries,” Mulaudzi adds.
He emphasises that it is the City’s responsibility to keep both people and animals safe.
“Never give fireworks to children under the age of 16, never throw fireworks or aim them at another person, animal, or building, and never handle fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Mulaudzi cautions.
Residents are urged to comply with all municipal bylaws and to dial 10177 or 112 from a cell phone in the event of a life-threatening emergency.
