The 30th edition of the African Bank Soweto Marathon — fondly known as “The People’s Race” — is just days away on 29 November 2025. In preparation, the City of Johannesburg and race organisers conducted a full-route inspection to ensure a seamless and safe experience for the thousands of runners expected to tackle the 42.2km marathon, the 21.1km half-marathon, and the 10km race.
The route, which remains unchanged, takes runners through Soweto’s iconic cultural and historical landmarks, including Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Memorial. Over the past few days, officials carefully assessed the entire course.
“A primary focus of the inspection was the strategic placement and efficiency of water points. Organisers confirmed that the water stations are optimally located and fully prepared to support the large number of runners, ensuring every participant is looked after throughout this challenging route,” said Tebogo Makhothi, Project Manager from Sport and Recreation, City of Johannesburg.
The joint inspection with City officials also helped identify any potential areas of concern to be addressed before race day.
Runners are now encouraged to wrap up their training, confident that the route and supporting logistics are in top condition. Entries remain open for anyone wishing to experience this historic race on 29 November.
