JMPD steps up visibility and traffic control for G20 Leaders’ Summit

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) looks forward to keeping traffic and security under control during the momentous occasion of Johannesburg hosting the G20 Summit this week. In preparation for the arrival of international leaders, delegates, and global stakeholders, the JMPD, working closely with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP), Tshwane and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Departments, and the South African Police Service (SAPS), will lead a coordinated traffic and security operation across Gauteng on 22 and 23 November 2025.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla says that as the host city, Johannesburg will see the largest concentration of traffic control, convoy escorting, and route protection operations, and the JMPD will play an important role in ensuring public safety and securing movement across all key corridors.

“Although this is a joint provincial operation, the JMPD is at the forefront given Johannesburg’s role as the host city for the G20 Summit. Our officers will be deployed in large numbers across major routes, ensuring secure convoy movement and keeping traffic flowing wherever possible,” notes Fihla.

He adds that the increased visibility of JMPD officers is essential to maintaining order and ensuring the safety of residents and international delegates.

“The JMPD’s presence on the roads is critical during this period. We are working hand-in-hand with other law-enforcement partners, but Johannesburg’s streets are our responsibility, and we are prepared,” Fihla stresses.

Fihla adds that residents and all road users should take note of the following operation schedule to ease and assist with their movements on the roads: On Saturday 22 November and Sunday 23 November 2025 rolling road closures in Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni will commence in the mornings from 07am to 10am and evenings from 5pm to 8pm.
