​Joburg City Theatres (JCT)​ is stepping confidently into a new era of growth, creativity, and modernisation, strengthening its position as one of Johannesburg’s leading cultural institutions. The momentum follows a landmark moment—the 45th anniversary of the iconic Roodepoort Theatre—an occasion that celebrated the city’s rich performing arts heritage while signalling an exciting future ahead.

“Having celebrated the Roodepoort Theatre’s 45th birthday this financial year, JCT is now looking forward to building on that milestone with a clear focus on infrastructure development and strategic cultural programming,” says Bongani Maseko, City Theatres’ acting GM for Communication and Marketing.

The anniversary event reignited public interest and deepened community engagement, reaffirming the theatre’s place in Joburg’s cultural landscape. At the same time, JCT continues to make significant investments in capital upgrades designed to future-proof its venues and enhance service delivery across the city.

“These initiatives not only preserve the legacy of JCT’s theatres but also attract new audiences and talent across Johannesburg’s performing arts scene,” Maseko explains. “The anniversary both honoured Roodepoort Theatre’s proud history and marked the beginning of a new and exciting chapter for us.”

As a key driver of cultural development in the city, JCT remains committed to bringing people together through creative expression, social cohesion, and inclusive programming. “These efforts are all about making JCT stronger, more inclusive, and a leader in the arts for everyone in the City of Joburg,” Maseko adds.

Capital investment projects currently underway include the modernisation of stages, upgrades to hospitality and catering areas, and the refurbishment of theatre buildings. These improvements aim to elevate audience experiences, enhance operational efficiency, and reinforce JCT’s standing as a world-class arts institution.

“With strong plans in place and the recent clean audit of JCT, we are ready to grow, celebrate history, and build a brighter future. JCT remains a vital part of Johannesburg’s cultural life,” says Maseko.

The developments come as Johannesburg prepares to welcome the global community for the G20 Summit this week—an opportunity to showcase the city’s vibrant arts and culture sector on a world stage while highlighting the creative talent that defines the Joburg spirit.
