Explore Joburg’s heritage and hiking sites to refresh your senses

As we step into spring and heritage celebrations, the beautiful city of Joburg has plenty to offer everyone, from scenery to fresh air and even some legacy that we have inherited from past generations.

Although we are under strict Covid-19 regulations, there are ways to enjoy yourself in and around the city in a safe and social distancing manner, just ask avid Joburg-based hiker Zakiyya Wadee.

Wadee recently explored a mix of cultural and natural heritage while enjoying peaceful walks. She often hikes to explore various trails and the beauty of nature and its diverse wilderness.

“For years, I have explored Joburg trails including Melville Koppies and its forgotten natural and cultural wonders. The top part of the koppie has exposed me to the spectacular natural beauty of Joburg and its various settlements. Its evergreen indigenous vegetation is remarkable,” she said.

She also recently hiked through the village of Majakaneng on the outskirts of Joburg for an adventure that included climbing a striking mountain and swimming in the freshest of streams. It also gave her the freedom to explore and learn from the hike guides and the community.

“In Majakaneng, the community opened their homes and lives to us, and we were able to appreciate what life in a village entails. It was an awe-inspired journey,” she said.

Experts suggest that spending at least 20 minutes a day out in nature is associated with good health and well-being. Walking and looking at spectacular natural sceneries and heritage sites offer an appreciation of jewels of diverse natural landscapes.

The Deputy Director for Sport and Recreation in the City of Joburg, Karen du Plessis, said that by its nature, hiking is safe and encourages social distancing while enjoying the soothing expanse of the outdoors.

MMC for Community Development Cllr Margaret Arnolds said that lockdown and load-shedding have taught humans that we can’t always rely on technology to fulfil our daily dose of relaxation time.

“Even if you are tired of the city scene and looking for some new adventures, spending time at a nearby hiking spot is worth a try,” said MMC Arnolds.
