The Sport and Recreation Directorate within the City of Johannesburg’s Community Development department recently joined forces with the Central Gauteng Blind Cricket to host a national T-20 selection tournament for the 2022 Blind Cricket World Cup.
It took place at Pirates Cricket Club in Region B, Hyde Park High School and the Wanderers Cricket Stadium in Region E. Some matches were played at Braamfischer Oval Cricket in Region C. It was a well-rounded exposure for everyone involved as it had players from other provinces.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg Cllr Margaret Arnolds commended everyone who was involved in staging the successful tournament.
“Echoing what is known in the cricket fraternity, ‘To us cricket is a game where idols are made’. It has gone beyond just being a gentleman’s game. On and off the pitch friendships are forged, even in the opposition’s side.
“The engagements between the City and cricket structures are evolving and the plan is to implement development programmes for all kinds of cricket. This adds to one of the values of Community Development of inclusivity, which embraces diversity and recognises that individuals have a right to services and participation,” said Cllr Arnolds.
In appreciating of this partnership with the City of Joburg, the President of Central Gauteng Lions Blind Cricket, Isaac Bidla, said: “The support and your assistance will always open new opportunities for the team Central Gauteng Lions Blind Cricket but for Blind Cricket South Africa at large.”
The City of Joburg’s contribution to the partnership entails availing and maintaining cricket pitches and availing effective and committed staff. The Central Gauteng Lions Blind Cricket Team, which has been at the forefront of inclusivity for the visually impaired, is based at one of the city’s facilities in region C, Braamfischerville Cricket Oval. The facility is well looked after and used for training and tournaments.
Bidla said the tournament produced potential players who will be part of those travelling to India for the Blind Cricket World Cup next year.
