Thousands of pupils exposed to careers in transport

As part of the October Transport Month 2021, the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre and various stakeholders are currently hosting a career expo for 1 700 pupils from 18 – 21 October 2021.

The four-day expo, celebrated under the theme: “Growing South Africa’s Transport System Together” will promote various career opportunities available in the transport sector.

Through a comprehensive and interactive programme of activities, pupils will be exposed to public transport, roads infrastructure, non-motorised transport, sustainable and innovative transport solutions in Johannesburg.

The department will also showcase the full range of career opportunities available in the industry. It will also serve to create awareness of the diversity of the industry and its sectors, and how it affects our daily lives, highlight the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as gateway subjects to access in demand skills and hard to fill vacancies.

The transport department will also raise awareness on the important role of transport in the economy and raise awareness on road safety as well as the increased need for a greener transport industry and the impact of our transport industry on the environment.

The focus week targets grade 9-11 pupils from previously disadvantaged schools in Johannesburg. They will be exposed to the diversity of the industry and its sectors and how it affects our daily lives as well as projecting the transport industry as the employer of choice.

Sci-Bono has collaborated with 11 companies in the transport industry, who will exhibit and present talks to pupils. Sci-Bono staff will also do several science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related activities to encourage pupils in a fun and educational way. The programme will run from 09:00 to 13:00 daily.
