Two JDA projects bag three awards at the 2021 GIfA

Two projects implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), a wholly owned area-based development agency of the City of Johannesburg, have emerged as winners, at the 2021 Gauteng Institute for Architecture (GIfA) Awards.

The Westbury Transformation Development Centre (WTDC) won two awards, an Award of Merit and a President Award, and the restoration of the Workers Museum Cottages project in Newtown scooped the Small Practice category award.

The awards were celebrated and presented at the new GIfA offices in Melrose Estate, Johannesburg, recently. Every year, the GIfA awards celebrate in Gauteng. To encourage the best architecture in the province and recognise good design.

“We are excited to receive the honour at GIfA awards 2021. Our vision is to continue building a more welcoming, competitive and resilient Johannesburg that is a better city to live, work and play in,” said Sherylee Moonsamy, the Acting Chief Executive Officer at the JDA.

The Ntsika Architects designed the upgrade of the WTDC. The project was part of the “high spec” public building, implemented by the JDA on behalf of the City.

The WTDC consists of a sport and recreation facility. An early childhood development with old-age care, several retail shops, a bakery, and sewing rooms. The outside tallest green screen walls are there to boost the green building elements, such as double glazing and rainwater harvesting.

Ntsika Architects and specialist heritage architects Mayat Hart must take a bow for showcasing the innovative work.
