Pikitup’s distribution of 240 litre bins in Ivory Park in Midrand has been completed and a total of 36 000 bins have been distributed to the residents in the area.
The bin distribution process started in September 2020 and was only completed at by the end of March 2021.

The following wards 77, 78, 79, 80, 92, 110, 111, 133 and 32 were the recipients of the new bins.
In the past, the area was using old bins that were incompatible with Pikitup compactor trucks which resulted in inefficiencies in waste collection because the old bins had no handles that made it easier for them to be lifted and emptied in the trucks automatically.
This situation resulted in waste collection services in the area taking longer to be finalised as opposed to other areas that had bins that were compatible with Pikitup’s compactor trucks.
Although, the bin distribution process has been completed, Pikitup noted with concern that some of the residents do not use the new bins because they fear that they might be stolen.
Other residents have been seen using the bins for purposes that they were not designed for such as using them to transport alcoholic beverages.
Pikitup appeals to residents in the area to firstly use the bins for the purposes of disposing waste in them and to leave the bins outside their properties for collection on the scheduled collection days.
These simple acts will ensure an efficient waste collection service and that the area is serviced on time.
Furthermore residents in are advised to immediately put the bins in their properties after collection to avert criminals from stealing their bins.
Pikitup would also like to remind residents whose bins have been stolen or damaged on the correct process to follow to order a new bin:
● First time bin request is for free, but after that the replacement is at a cost if the resident loses his or her bin.
● A damaged bin will be replaced at no cost to the customer for free, provided a damaged bin is recovered by Pikitup.
● A lost or stolen bin will only be replaced for free once in a bin’s useful life cycle after which residents will be expected to incur costs for stolen or lost bins. This implies that any further requests for replacement will incur a fee which equates to the replacement cost of a bin.
● Customers/residents who require an additional bin will be provided at a cost to residents.
● Residents who wish to order bins from Pikitup are advised to call the City’s Call Centre or Pikitup’s in-house call centre where they will be issued with a reference number which is crucial to receive a bin.
● Residents will not be issued with new bins without the reference number.
In terms of sectional title properties, bins will be provided equal to the lower of the number of units, for example if a complex has 200 units but has space to store 130 bins, only 130 will be provided.
Only the property owner or the managing agent may apply for a bin in such properties. Tenants require a letter of authority from the owner or managing agent when applying for a bin.
Pikitup reserves the right to determine the type of service, the minimum number of bins and the frequency of services.
