The City of Johannesburg, through the Department of Social Development and under the leadership of the MMC for Health and Social Development, Cllr Ennie Makhafola, is proud to celebrate Older Persons’ Month by hosting a special event at Soweto Theatre to honour and recognise the invaluable contributions of senior citizens across the City.
The celebration pays tribute to the wisdom, resilience, and lifelong service of older persons who continue to nurture families, mentor younger generations, and uphold the social and cultural values that define our communities.
“The City remains deeply committed to ensuring that our senior citizens are respected, valued, and supported. This event is a reflection of our ongoing efforts to protect their rights and promote their well-being,” said Cllr Makhafola.
The initiative forms part of the department’s continuous work to promote the dignity, safety, and inclusion of older persons. It also aims to foster intergenerational dialogue by creating opportunities for the youth to learn from the life experiences and stories of elders, while enjoying moments of entertainment, reflection, and appreciation.
“Our senior citizens are the living memory of our communities — their sacrifices and wisdom continue to shape the City’s growth and inspire our shared vision for a caring and inclusive Johannesburg,” added Cllr Makhafola.
Residents, families, and community partners are encouraged to join in the celebrations as the City pays tribute to those who have laid the foundations upon which future generations continue to build.
