The afterglow of pride and unity still lingers along the streets of Sandton following the 36th Johannesburg Pride celebrations, which filled the area with vibrant colour, music, and joy on Saturday, 25 October 2025.
Allies and members of the queer community came together to celebrate diversity in true Joburg style — through bold fashion, self-expression, and creativity. It was a day of love, inclusion, and solidarity, marking more than three decades of visibility and empowerment.
The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, showed his support and delivered the opening remarks, reaffirming the City’s commitment to human rights and equality.
“We are here to celebrate Pride today. You are most welcome in Johannesburg — this is your City, enjoy it. Let’s show the world, especially the African continent, that we have rights and must be free to celebrate who we are. No one should discriminate against anyone. We’re here to give our full support as the City of Johannesburg,” said Cllr Morero. The Mayor also used the opportunity to encourage civic responsibility among residents.
“I have two requests — help us keep Johannesburg clean and remember to pay your rates and taxes. Let’s enjoy today and have fun!”
Kaye Ally, founder and director of the Pride of Africa Foundation, organisers of Johannesburg Pride, said this year’s theme, “Purely, Queerly, African”, reminds everyone that while South Africa’s constitution protects LGBTQIA+ rights, lived experiences still fall short of that promise.
“Violence, discrimination, and the everyday policing of queer existence persist. Pride is our reminder that we are still here, still visible, and still demanding that equality means more than words on paper,” said Ally.
Now in its 36th year, Johannesburg Pride continues to stand as one of Africa’s most inclusive and diverse celebrations — a testament to resilience, visibility, and unity.
