It was a fun-filled time at most recreation facilities in the City of Johannesburg as children gathered under strict lockdown conditions to play.
Sport and Recreation Assistant Director Joyce Jiyane said: “At first when children were accessing our recreation centres, it was mind bottling, but as days progressed our Sport and Recreation Officers got used to social distance games formations and became comfortable.
All that was possible because of compliance to Covid-19 protocols and all did their best to encourage children to stick to them.”
It was interesting how children could be so free yet careful and not forget their masks and regularly wash their hands. Kudos to the schools for the foundation laid.
Sport and Recreation Region C held activities such as ball kicking, soccer, ring throwing, aerobics, and indigenous games at, Braamfisher Multipurpose Centre, Boskruin Recreation Centre and Cosmo City Multipurpose Centre recently.
Though the cold weather and rainy day dawned on the last day, that did not distract a committed Region C Team.
“We played, laughed, had fun and kept on asking to play again and again and were told that time was up,” said a 13-year-old Tapiwa Themba.
In collaboration with the Young Voice Academy, Sport and Recreation Region D held activities that promoted engagement with youth at Kopanong Hall, Dobsonville.
“Our joint youth programme dealt with challenges of civic education, environmental degradation and promotion of self-interest in trade and other multilateral engagements related to Covid-19 pandemic,” said Rapelang Simente, the founder of the Young Voice Academy.
The holiday programmes ended in a jolly mood and the City is stepping up to allow for more activities and settling into the new Covid-19 routine, said Buhle Mtshengu at Cosmo City Multipurpose Centre.
