The Joburg Zoo embarks on a clean-up campaign tomorrow to keep it litter free

The Johannesburg Zoo will embark on a clean-up campaign tomorrow, Friday, 7 November 2025, as part of its ongoing efforts to keep the facility clean and safe for both animals and visitors. The Anti-Litter Campaign will take place at the Zoo’s Bandstand from 09h00 to 13h00.

With warmer weather attracting families, schools, residents, and tourists to its 55 hectares of green space, the Zoo has recently noticed a worrying increase in litter — from plastic bottles and snack wrappers to discarded paper. This growing problem poses a serious threat to the well-being of the more than 2,000 animals housed across 320 species.

Litter may seem harmless, but it can cause severe injuries or even death to animals that ingest plastic, rubber, or foil. Small items like bottle caps and straws are hazardous and can also pollute water sources and damage the broader ecosystem.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about litter’s harmful impact on the environment, promote collective responsibility for keeping the Zoo clean, and empower learners and the public to take action in their communities.

How JCPZ will celebrate the day:

  • Educational Exhibits: Key stakeholders will showcase environmental programmes and share knowledge on conservation.
  • Masibambisane Project: The Zoo will offer free entry and transport to four schools that normally face access challenges.
  • Creative Activities: Learners will express their commitment through poetry, anti-litter posters, and “trash art” made from recyclable materials.

Visitors are encouraged to join the campaign and help protect Joburg’s beloved animals.
