City of Johannesburg celebrate Women’s Day

The streets of Joburg were painted in pink with the Totalsports Women’s Race on Women’s Day at Marks Parks after two years of the Covid-19 pandemic. The 5km and 10km walk/run among women and men who supported this initiative was welcomed back in full attendance accompanied by the high spirits of active living and healthy lifestyle.
The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, was there to wish everyone a good race and to officially open it. Though she wasn’t feeling well, her presence was appreciated by the lot.
“Wishing you all the best. I wish I could join you, but I will join you next year. Run your best. Women’s Day is about women help women; about women working together. Unlike this race, we are not running against each other, but we are running together,” said Cllr Phalatse.
The Totalsports Women’s race raises awareness of the importance of taking care of one’s health especially that of women. It encourages women to keep tabs of their health by doing regular checkups such as pap smear and breast cancer among other diseases affecting women.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Cllr Ronald Harris was also part of this momentous event of women coming together to celebrate one another and later handed over prizes to those who came first in the different age groups, the eldest to win the prize was in her 70s.
“It is a lovely day, the weather played up beautifully. The sea of pink is tremendous. It speaks to the dedication and commitment the ladies have in keeping themselves healthy, competitive, and getting their mental health intact.”
He also applauded the hard-working people who put together a brilliant event to celebrate South Africa’s Women’s Day.
“We thank the people of the City of Johannesburg, Sport and Recreation, the sponsors and Totalsports for making this event a memorable and successful one.”
