Youth told to always be geared for the workplace

In a City where most young people are unemployed and some short-term contracts are ending, the skills development and workplace preparedness training hosted by the Department of Public Safety was empowering for those looking for work. Vusi Gumbi, an intern in the department, said the training held recently was inspiring for all attendees.
“It’s not every day where you see such a prestigious moment wherein industry experts dish out their knowledge to help us young people find meaningful employment,” said Gumbi.
Scores of youngsters recently filled the lecture auditorium at the Metro Centre to attend the training, which was facilitated by, among others, the Department of Labour, the National Youth Development Agency, the Department of Social Development, and the New Beginnings Recruitment Agency.
Esther Mokoena, the founder of New Beginnings Recruitment Agency, told job seekers to always look for work opportunities.
“We are not in the business of finding you a job, but of assisting companies in finding suitable candidates,” Mokoena said, urging job seekers to make their curriculum vitae (CVs) attractive.
She told attendees their CVs were the gatekeepers between them and prospective employers.
“Your CV speaks volumes about you,” she said. “When you put down your work history descriptions, be mindful not to just write the company name and year but to add information that gives you candidate status.”
Attendees left the workshop with a better understanding of what is needed when applying for a job.
Because 21st-century youth have more than one social media account, Mokoena encouraged them to use these to look for work.
She warned, “you should never find yourself in a position where you are going to pay any amount to secure a job. Be active when you are employed. There are spaces like ‘Thetha’ that can help you build your portfolio”, she said.
Mokoena called on all attendees to consult the Department of Labour for information on labour law and the benefits workers accrue during their employment tenure.
Over 58 certificates of course completion were handed out to youngsters who participated in the training.
