City pilots new way of generating key inner-city data

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) and the Department of Development Planning: City Transformation have launched an innovative project that develops and pilots the City of Johannesburg’s first Inner City Spatial Model.

This model seeks to test new and innovative ways of capturing and displaying spatial data for the inner city and to develop a three-dimensional digital twin for a pilot study area within the Inner-City boundaries.

To guide the development of the Inner City Spatial Model (ICSM) platform, Digital Jozi, a marketing and communication campaign was launched in July 2021 with the focus on developing an active online community that encourages two-way conversation.

The campaign strives to educate its audience on the information provided by the ICSM platform, how this information can change their lives, and the importance of data capturing in the development of Jozi’s digital twin.

Since its launch, Digital Jozi has piloted new ways of generating spatial data around relevant and audience-specific themes that have aided in the development of spatial layers on the Inner City Spatial Model (ICSM), thus catering to a wide range and diverse stakeholders in the campaign and the platform.

This information has been integrated into the model as new primary data layers along with important city department layers relating to spatial data.

Project Outcomes

●          Various secondary datasets relating but not restricted to: environment, heritage, infrastructure, legislation

●          Digitisation and spatialisation of Inner City Policies and Projects

●          Digital on-site and online surveys, i.e. Safer Jozi Survey

●          3D visualisation of land use and urban quality data of the pilot area
