Face and voice of JMPD retires after 41 years

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar needs no introduction. His face and voice have been a familiar feature on media platforms across the country for over two decades of his career as a stellar spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metropolitan p Police Department (JMPD).

Minnaar is now retiring after 41 years of dedicated service to the City and is laying down his uniform and hat. Monday, 28 February, marked his last day in service of the JMPD.

It all started in 1981 when Minnaar joined the law enforcement fraternity as a traffic officer and over the years, he’s risen through the ranks until he was appointed official spokesperson for the JMPD in 2001.

Hlula Msimang, the Head of the Public Safety Department, said Minnaar was an exemplary officer.

“He has been the face of JMPD for many years. His face is the most recognisable in policing because of his dedication and leadership. He is an amazing example to young officers on how to conduct themselves in the force,” said Msimang during a farewell function.

Colleagues, the Minnaar family and Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) were among the guests at the event. The function started with a ceremonial roadblock in front of the head office thereafter anecdotes and memories were shared at an official farewell ceremony.

Cllr Mpho Phalatse, the Executive Mayor of the City, said seeing Minnaar retiring is “one of the hardest things”.

“It’s a sad day. The passion with which you served is unparalleled,” she added while commending Minnaar for always having a smile on his face.

Cllr David Tembe, the MMC for Public Safety said very few can speak ill of Minnaar’s character. “When you retire with honour you retire with your rank. Wayne gave 41 years of unbroken service.”

Cllr Micheal Sun, the MMC for Environment and  Infrastructure Services (EISD) said if he was asked to write something about Minnaar he would have failed because “where do you start to write about the 41 years of dedication and selflessness he showed to the JMPD and the people of Joburg”.

“Being the face of JMPD is not easy, but Minnaar did it with so much ease. Thank you for the 41 golden years of serving the City. Have a golden start and please do not be too far from us,” Sun said.
