Under the clear skies of a warm and sunny Joburg morning, Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu initiated the elite race of the highly anticipated Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg at 5:30am, setting the stage for a thrilling competition that saw thousands of cyclists push their limits across the City’s scenic landscape.
In a dazzling display of athleticism, Marc Pritzen emerged victorious in the men’s elite category, crossing the 97-kilometre challenge finish line at the FNB Stadium with an impressive time of 2 hours and 9 minutes. This marked Pritzen’s second triumph at the 947 Ride Joburg. He dedicated the win to his father, who celebrated his birthday on the same day.
“I am extremely happy about this win,” said Pritzen.
Luke Moir claimed the second spot with a mere one-second difference, clocking in at 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 1 second. Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg secured the third position in 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 21 seconds.
Carla Oberholzer, a four-time African champion, emerged victorious in the women’s elite race, completing the course in 2 hours, 41 minutes, and 43 seconds. Maude Elaine Le Roux secured the second position, followed by Joanna Van De Winkel.
Expressing her joy, Oberholzer remarked, “I am truly honoured and thrilled to clinch victory at the 2023 947 Ride Joburg. This win represents not just a personal achievement, but a testament to the dedication and hard work of my entire team.”
Winners were awarded significant cash prizes, with first-place recipients receiving R200, 000, second-place securing R75, 000, and third-place claiming R15, 000.
Cllr. Magwentshu praised the event organisers. “The Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg showcased exactly what the City is capable of,” he said.
“There has been a call from the Premier of the Province, saying he wants to see events happening in Gauteng. Here we are answering that call, saying that the City is ready and this event is evidence,” he said.
Race Director Fritz Pienaar expressed satisfaction with the event’s turnout, emphasising its positive impact on the City’s economy. Over 13,000 cyclists participated in this year’s race, enjoying a unique opportunity to explore Johannesburg’s landmarks on closed-off roads.
To ensure the safety of participants and spectators, Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) worked collaboratively, managing road closures and overseeing the smooth execution of the event.
Pienaar commended this year’s route, which provided cyclists with a challenging yet enjoyable experience through diverse terrains.
Deputy Director for Events and Compliance, Itumeleng Mangke, highlighted the collaborative efforts of City entities and partners, emphasising the positive impacts, including short-term job creation opportunities and enhanced partnerships.
Cllr. Magwentshu extended congratulations to all cyclists and the City’s cycling team for crossing the finish line. The festivities continued post-race, with cyclists and spectators indulging in good music, food, and socialising, marking the conclusion of a spectacular Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg event.
